Sports: Remembering George Steinbrenner

(July 4, 1930 – July 13, 2010)

On January 3, 1973, Steinbrenner and minority partner Burke led a group of investors, which included Lester Crown, John DeLoreanand Nelson Bunker Hunt, in purchasing the Yankees from CBS. For years, the selling price was reported to be $10 million. However, Steinbrenner later revealed that the deal included two parking garages that CBS had bought from the city, and soon after the deal closed, CBS bought back the garages for $1.2 million. The net cost to the group for the Yankees was therefore $8.8 million.

In 37-plus seasons as owner, Steinbrenner led the Yankees to seven World Series championships, 11 American League pennants and 16 AL East titles. Forbes now values the Yankees at $1.6-billion.

Sports: Fathead, company owned by Dan Gilbert, cuts LeBron James pics to $17.41, Benedict Arnold’s birthyear

(via nydailynews.com)

It didn’t take long for Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert to try and make a little money off LeBron James‘ departure from Cleveland for the Miami Heat, even if it’s only $17.41.

Fathead, a company owned by Gilbert that makes life-size vinyl wall graphics of professional athletes and cartoon characters, has put all their remaining Fatheads picturing King James in a Cleveland Cavaliers uniform on sale. That’s not surprising. What is surprising is that the company has priced the giant stickers at $17.41. Fatheads normally retail between $50 and $100.

Gilbert and his partners purchased Fathead in 2006.

What’s the significance of $17.41? One of the most notorious traitors in American history, Benedict Arnold, was born in 1741. Arnold was a general in the Continental Army during the American Revolution, but joined the British Army in 1780.

LeBron, after spending seven years playing for his hometown team, announced on live television Thursday night that he was leaving for the Heat, to form a “dream team” with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. This sparked reactions of anger and disappointment in Cleveland that probably rivaled their colonial counterparts.

Gilbert, infuriated that James bolted for South Beach in the middle of the night without giving him an explanation, took to the internet to vent his frustrations.

In a letter posted on the Cavaliers’ official website, Gilbert tore his former star player apart, calling him “narcissistic” and “cowardly,” while branding James’ actions during his free agency as a “shameful display of selfishness and betrayal.”

“I personally guarantee that the Cleveland Cavaliers will win an NBA championship before the self-title former ‘King’ wins one,” Gilbert declared.

Sports: Dan Gilbert’s Letter to Cavs Fans

If you haven’t heard already, Cavs owner, Dan Gilbert wrote a “4-Page Letter” and enclosed it with a Kiss… MY @$$! I wonder if tried to press the recall button after he wrote this. Let this video ride as you continue reading. – HOC (#TeamLeBron)

Dear Cleveland, All Of Northeast Ohio and Cleveland Cavaliers Supporters Wherever You May Be Tonight;

As you now know, our former hero, who grew up in the very region that he deserted this evening, is no longer a Cleveland Cavalier.

This was announced with a several day, narcissistic, self-promotional build-up culminating with a national TV special of his “decision” unlike anything ever “witnessed” in the history of sports and probably the history of entertainment.

Clearly, this is bitterly disappointing to all of us.

The good news is that the ownership team and the rest of the hard-working, loyal, and driven staff over here at your hometown Cavaliers have not betrayed you nor NEVER will betray you.

New Jersey Nets minority owner Jay-Z wines and dines free agent LeBron James in New York

(source: www.nydailynews.com)

Hip-hop magnate and Nets minority owner Jay-Z has said publicly that he’s not going to pressure his friend LeBron James to join his team, but who says he can’t seduce him a little?

On Friday, less than a week before a handful of NBA ball clubs travel to Ohio to woo the soon-to-be free agent into one of their jerseys, King James spent some quality time with Jay-Z in New York, and got a taste of the super-swank life that could be his if he made the Nets his team.

James made a surprise appearance at the 40th birthday party for branding guru Steve Stoute that took place Friday night at a magnificent seventh-floor roof garden at Rockefeller Center. (In addition to being a close friend of Jay-Z’s, Stoute is the founder of Translations, the marketing firm that has put James together with McDonald’s and other deep-pocketed corporate sponsors.)

At the party, LeBron – who’s no stranger to VIP treatment – got the full Jay-Z Family experience: he arrived with the rapper and his wife Beyoncé. Mary J. Blige was also on hand. He ate a meal catered by Chef April Bloomfield and the staff of the Spotted Pig, which counts Jay-Z as an investor. (Dishes included beef and Stilton pie and Arctic char; and at 2 a.m., breakfast with something called “steak and egg biscuits” was served.) And helping the crowd work off all those calories was Beyoncé’s sister Solange Knowles, who played deejay for the evening.
